Magnesium is involved in enough different processes in the body that it rarely gets its own moment. What It Is
Magnesium is a divalent cation (Mg2+) that acts as a cofactor for more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the human body, more than almost any other mineral, which is part of why its effects are broad rather than confined to one organ system.
Role in the Body
Stabilising the ATP molecule itself
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecule cells run on for energy, is chemically unstable on its own: its three phosphate groups carry negative charges that repel each other. In the cell, ATP exists almost entirely as a magnesium-ATP complex, with the Mg2+ ion neutralising that charge repulsion and holding the molecule in the correct conformation for enzymes to recognise and use it. Because of this, magnesium isn't just involved in energy metabolism at the margins, it's a structural requirement for the functional form of the cell's basic energy currency, which is why magnesium status is discussed in the context of fatigue alongside iron.
Ion channel regulation in muscle and nerve tissue
Magnesium acts as a natural regulator of calcium's role in muscle contraction, competing with calcium for binding sites and helping modulate calcium channel activity, which contributes to the muscle relaxation phase that follows a calcium-triggered contraction. Bone mineral structure
A meaningful share, roughly 50 to 60%, of the body's magnesium is stored in bone, partly incorporated into the surface of hydroxyapatite crystals alongside calcium and phosphorus, where it appears to influence crystal size and bone mineral density regulation.
Food Sources (General)
Nuts and seeds (especially pumpkin seeds and flaxseed), legumes, whole grains, and dark leafy greens are the strongest dietary sources. Magnesium content in plant foods varies considerably with soil composition, which is one reason published values differ across sources.
Which Microgreens Have It
Amaranth has the strongest evidence: not just a real number, but the single highest magnesium figure across all 17 microgreen species measured in the study that tested it, the only one the study's authors judged could provide over 15% of daily requirement per 100g serving. Sunflower's figure is corroborated by two independent studies landing in a similar range, which gives it more confidence than a single-study figure would. Flax and Spinach both lack a microgreen-specific measurement. Flax's mature seed is exceptionally magnesium-rich, but germination draws down stored seed reserves, the same drawdown effect already documented on Flax's own Omega-3 post, so porting the seed's number onto the microgreen would risk overstating it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will magnesium actually help me sleep better, the way supplement ads claim?
Magnesium's role in nerve excitability (via the NMDA receptor) is real biochemistry, and genuine deficiency can affect sleep and muscle function, but that's a different claim from a healthy, non-deficient person taking extra magnesium and sleeping better. The evidence for the second claim is much thinner than supplement marketing suggests.
Is flaxseed's famous magnesium content the same in flax microgreens?
Not necessarily. Mature flaxseed is exceptionally magnesium-rich, but germination uses up some of the seed's stored reserves for growth, similar to what happens with flax's omega-3 content. Without a direct microgreen-stage measurement, the two numbers shouldn't be assumed to match.
With magnesium cofactoring 300+ enzymes, should I just take a supplement instead of worrying about food sources?
Most people eating a varied diet get adequate magnesium without supplementing, and food sources come with the rest of a plant's nutrient package rather than an isolated mineral. A supplement makes sense for a diagnosed deficiency, which is a conversation for a doctor, not a default just because the enzyme list looks impressive.
